People sometimes aren’t sure how much an English-speaking guide will add to their trip. Here are some helpful tips to decide what is best for you and your group.
A guide will do much more than just share the sights you’ll see from the boat in English. A guide also acts as a mate to help you on and off the boat, holds your things, and arranges any other shore excursions you may want to do. The guide is with you the whole way to ensure everything goes as perfectly as possible.
Your guide can recommend restaurant specialties, share tidbits and stories, lead you along little known paths, recommend trusted vendors for any shopping, get to know you, and suggest things that can truly enhance your trip and make it even more special and memorable.
I highly recommend a guide if:
- you have more than four or five people in your group
- kids are aboard
- you want to do more shore excursions like going to a waterfall, horse-back riding, or have specific dietary requests
- you don’t speak any Spanish
- you want someone to help take photos of your special day so you have them as mementos
- you want to know the best and most trustworthy vendors for any shopping
- you like to delve deep and learn more about an area, the culture, and the people
You probably won’t get much benefit from a guide if:
- you speak Spanish
- you are doing a shorter tour with limited time to explore at leisure
- you will spend most of your time aboard the boat and at a restaurant or relaxing one of the beautiful, sparsely populated beaches
- you’re booking a Super Panga since the captains of the Super Pangas speak some English
Having a guide or not is completely up to you. Our reviews on TripAdvisor and Google show that people who choose me to be their guide for the day gain a lot from the added insight and experience, and a guide isn’t necessary to have a marvelous day on the water.
